Why the IB?
The International Baccalaureate is a challenging, broad-based diploma wherein students take six subjects and are not expected to study only three or four subjects over a two year period. The IB is rigorous and the curriculum makes similar intellectual demands to ‘A’ Levels, but provides variety AND depth. The IB is a popular choice with international students as the IB diploma is accepted as a university entry qualification throughout the world in over 100 countries. Students must be 16 yrs old by 31 August in the year of entry.
Where the classes take placeThe IB teaching takes place a short distance from the Buckswood at Bexhill college which moved to a brand new campus in September 2004. It is fully equipped to the highest standards - the teaching is excellent and you will be able to study in a truly stimulating environment.
Where do the students come from?
Some of the very best local, students take the IB and many of the international students are exceptionally well-motivated and gifted young men and women from a number of countries. The academic atmosphere is challenging, exciting and stimulating!
The academic subjects on offer
Students doing the IB take three subjects at Higher Level and three at Standard level. Students select these subjects from the following six areas: native language; second language; mathematics; sciences; individuals and society ; visual arts or another from one of the five previous categories. Students must also study a philosophy course (the Theory of Knowledge), participate weekly in an activity from each of the three areas of Creativity, Action & Service (CAS), and complete an Extended Essay of 4000 words on a subject of their choice. The IB is assessed through a combination of internal coursework and externally marked final exams taken at the end of a student’s second year. The maximum overall diploma score is 45 points (24 pts is a pass) with the descending grade scale in each subject being 7 pts –1 pt. Extra points can be awarded for the Extended Essay and ToK. In recent years about 95% of our students passed the IB diploma with the vast majority entering top UK universities. Bexhill's expert teachers deliver the academic programme.
Creativity, Action & Service (CAS)
This is a compulsory element of the IB. All students must have completed at least 50 recorded participant hours in all three areas after two years in order to pass the diploma, irrespective of academic requirements. The IB challenges minds, bodies and hearts!

- Action: all sports plus mountain biking, paintball etc.
